About Merseyside
Named after the River Mersey, Merseyside is a Metropolitan
county situated in the North West of England, and was created on 1 April 1974.
It comprises Liverpool, St Helens, Knowsley, Sefton, and the Wirral. Merseyside's
northern border is Lancashire and Greater Manchester is its eastern border,
with Cheshire to the south.
The Mersey estuary splits the county into two, with the Wirral located on the west side of the estuary and the remainder of the county to
the east. Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service serve
the region, along with the North West Ambulance Service which serves Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester,
Lancashire and Cumbria.
