About Bristol
The largest city in the South West of the United Kingdom,
Bristol is a city shaped by its mercantile history and is closely associated
with the explorer John Cabot and the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
In more recent times, the city is a major employer in the aeronautical and hi-tech
business sectors.
The city includes the Hewlett
Packard national research centre and the aerospace firms
BAE systems, Airbus and
Rolls Royce who are based around the Filton
Aerodrome, which is world famous for its role in the development
of the Concorde aircraft.
There are a wide variety of sports played in the city, with two football sides,
Bristol City and
Bristol Rovers, a county championship cricket side
Gloucestershire CCC, a top level rugby union side
Bristol Rugby Union Club, one of the oldest rugby sides in the
world in Clifton Rugby Football Club
as well as a rugby league side the Bristol
Sonics.
