About Derbyshire
A largely rural county with Matlock at its administrative centre and Derby as its
only city, Derbyshire contains
the first national park in the United Kingdom,
The Peak District National Park, part of the new
National Forest and the World Heritage Centre in the Derwent Valley.
An area of outstanding natural beauty, the county has featured in many cinema and
TV productions, such as Peak Practice, Dead Man's Shoes, The Rainbow, Goodbye Mr
Chips, and The Chronicles of Narnia. The 2005 film
Pride and Prejudice featured Chatsworth House,
property of the Duke of Devonshire, as Mr Darcy's home Pemberley.
Perhaps the most quirky sports event played in the county is the traditional Royal
Shrovetide football played in Ashbourne which involves hundreds of residents,in
a game of football between the town's Uppard`s and Down`ards.
Top-level sports sides in Derbyshire include Derby County FC,
Chesterfield FC and
Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
