I meandered on up, exploring each hedge for signs of brittle rebirth in seedpods and dead flower heads. I picked up thistle and ground elder, gazed upon dainty clumps of speedwell hiding from the bleakest season. A singular mauve cornflower, bent double against the wind, its flimsiness apparent to the heavy pattering of rain on its petals seemed tired of the constant drizzle. I rescued it.
