The island was beautiful. The sun would shine everyday. Our hostel was only five minutes walk away from the beach. There were palm trees and water fountains scattered all over the place. It was very relaxing during the day and was buzzing at night.

I am beginning to wonder because, although the product was wonderful, beautiful, better than any before, the wrong decision I made later has haunted me ever since. What are you thinking? That I gave my beautiful baby away and have regretted it ever since? No!

They left together in his Land Rover later that afternoon for her home in Surrey and we had a phone call about three hours later to say that they had arrived safely. After a brief pause Steve left for Chester finally getting home in the small hours of the morning. He had travelled more than 600 miles in about four days.

Canoe Holiday

We slept well, tired from our exertions, but I was woken early next morning by someone blowing on my face. In those days we didn't have sewn-in groundsheets and this cow had poked his nose into the tent and blown hard, obviously wondering what on earth was inside. His or her nostrils were huge and wet and I couldn't get out of my sleeping bag quickly enough.

Thus reflecting in the pitch-darkness, I became suddenly aware of someone trying gently to roll me over to one side of the narrow bed. The hairs on the back of my neck bristled, my heart began to beat rapidly and I had great difficulty in maintaining my slow, deep, breathing which somehow seemed to be important.

With her father at the office Li, her mother and I sat around a low table in the centre of the lounge, taking afternoon tea served by a young Chinese girl. Conversation flowed easily but I was undecided whether I should address my remarks also to the three ladies - in Chinese coolie dress - who sat on low chairs at the outer edge of the room.
