Now, in this bright new age of computers and the Internet, aged 55, I finally have centre-stage again. I'm ready to explain what happened. Unfortunately, Mrs Thomas would now be very old. Or dead. If alive, she probably wouldn't even remember. But I do. I've never forgotten that morning. And I've never forgotten the lesson I learned about life. A lesson without grades or certificates.

Mum made attempts over the years to be a bit more adventurous in the kitchen trying to tempt Dad with such things as ''Pineapple, Cider and Bacon Casserole'' but to no avail. Unless Dad could make a positive identification of the things on his plate when he came home from a 12-hour shift at Hades UK plant, he wasn't interested.

We had the Essex Police launch to take our team and equipment to the ship and the Essex diving team followed in a large ribbed inflatable boat. We loaded the diving gear onto the boat and it was not long before we set off from Tilbury heading East towards Sheerness and the Mouth of the Thames Estuary.
