I eventually mastered the art of changing gear, turning 90 degree corners, stopping and, not least, controlling my panic as the thing took off down the slope on the bridge over the dual carriageway. The tumbles became less frequent and I learnt to live with the sore bottom and aching knees. Amsterdam here we come!
