If I am writing something special like a birthday card, my single letters appear like the alphabet teachers wrote on blackboards in infant school days. Even now, after years of reading, I have to ask about the spelling of many words as I write.

We went on a National Express coach, a pair of young travellers on a mission. He would be waiting for us with his young girlfriend. I read the destination over and over again: Haywards Heath. How very exotic. Having grown up on estate in Middlesbrough where venturing into town was an accomplishment, this felt huge!
